Awards For Reducing Waste Announced

EUREKA -- How much space do you require? What is your footprint on Earth? No matter your exact footprint on Earth, it is important to know how much and what type of impact you are having on Earth and in your own community.
Reducing, reusing and recycling are just a few ways to ensure that your footprint is kept to a minimum. Many people, organizations and businesses in Humboldt County doing just that: Reducing, reusing, and recycling. The Waste Reduction Awards Program -- through the Humboldt County Division of Environmental Health -- is an opportunity to recognize the achievements made by these waste reducers. Throughout Waste Awareness Week, April 18 through April 24, there will be several activities to showcase existing organizations and educate others about reducing waste and minimizing one's footprint on Earth.
2004 Award Recipients include:
* Arcata Community Recycling Center's Education Program;
* Arcata Library Bike Project;
* Baby's Best Diaper Service;
* CalTrans Adopt-A-Highway Project Recycle;
* Eel River Disposal & Recycling;
* Footprint Recycling;
* Grindables Recycling;
* Kernen Construction;
* Leon's Muffler;
* McLaughlin & Sons;
* Owsley's Recycled Paint;
* Pacific Builders;
* Washington School Recycling Team under leadership from Jeff Self;
* American Hydroponics;
* J&T Molded Plastics
* Arcata Community Recycling Center; and
* North Coast Recycling Market Development Zone.
Waste Reduction Award categories include best individual waste reduction effort or program; best business waste reduction effort or program; best government agency waste reduction effort or program; best other organization waste reduction effort or program; best "closing the loop" effort or program; most effective waste prevention, recycling, or composting activities (three separate awards); most effective use of recycled or reused materials in manufacturing; most effective construction and demolition diversion program; most effective school waste reduction program; most effective public education program; most effective collaboration effort in waste diversion; and the Unsung Heroes of the waste reduction world.
To apply for an award, complete a short application, write a one- to two-page summary of the program, and deliver it to the Division of Environmental Health by April 8.
